As dependence upon virtual solutions increase, the risks associated with data security and cyber breaches continue to grow as well, impacting a variety of industries worldwide including real estate. Cyber criminals have become more creative and their attacks increasingly destructive. According to a recent article in REALTOR Magazine, real estate was the second-most targeted industry for malware.

Below are a few tips to help protect your Data:

  • Change your passwords often
  • Use different password for each Account
  • Store passwords in an encrypted database like LastPass
  • Password Protect Mobile devices
  • Always use a secure, password protected WiFi connection
  • Beware of public WiFi, where Hackers may be lurking, use a personal hotspot instead or try a VPN (Virtual Private Network), such as Tunnel Bear, IPVanish or ExpressVPN, which encrypts your internet connection to keep your online activity private on any network (mobile, tablet, etc)
  • Encrypt your laptop Data too – Windows 10 Home doesn’t have encryption built into it, but Windows 10 Professional does. For Apple computers, make sure you enable the e FileVault data encryption feature.
  • Back Up Your data on a regular basis, by doing so, you’ll always have your data safe should you get attacked by ransomware that holds your computer hostage
  • Ensure that your computer firewall and antivirus software is up-to-date
  • BEWARE of phishing emails as those are the primary way many people become victims of a breach. Always be suspicious of unsolicited emails, especially with a link, even from people you know.
  • NEVER click a link in an email from an unknown sender
  • Set your spam filters to high and be sure email filters are up-to-date
  • NEVER click through an email to a bank account or other sire where personal data may be contained. Instead, go directly to the site.
  • Do not mix work and leisure activities on the same device
  • Lock all devices when not in use

Most states, including Virginia and West Virginia, have enacted legislation requiring notification of security breaches involving personal information.
